Our “SELECT” Auction: Only the best of what comes our way, hand selected by the brothers for your buying pleasure.
Featuring the impeccable, wide ranging collections of Eugene Thaw, one of America’s most distinguished gallerists, art historians, and benefactors. A respected authority of numerous artistic movements, Thaw’s legacy includes Master Drawings from the Thaw Collection at the Morgan Library, the Thaw Collection of Native American Art at Fenimore Art Museum, and the Thaw Collection of Ancient Nomadic Art at the Metropolitan Museum. Additionally, Thaw represented the Estate of Jackson Pollack and wrote the definitive Pollack Catalogue Raisonne. This sale features a representative survey of Thaw’s diverse collection. Highlights include oil paintings by Honore Daumier, Eugene Delacroix, and John Singer Sargent; watercolors, drawings and etchings by Henri Matisse, James Whistler, Claude Lorraine, Edouard Manet, and Vincent van Gogh; Renaissance drawings and bronzes; 19th c. English architectural models; ancient bronze and marble sculpture; Victorian taxidermy; American Native and Folk Art; and fine antiques and modern furnishings including important bronze decorative objects by Diego Giacometti.
Also on view are works of modern and contemporary art from the Estate of Earl McGrath and the Countess Camilla Pecci-Blunt Mcgrath. Movie and music executive turned blue chip gallerist, Earl Mcgrath was a powerful behind the scenes influencer, whose art collection consisted of the up-and-coming artist he championed, gifts from his many famous artist friends, and European modernist works from the Pecci-Blunt family collection. Artists include Robert Graham, Annie Leibovitz, Larry Rivers, Mark Ryden, Ed Henderson, Man Ray, and Roy Lichtenstein; over 35 small edition photographs by David Hockney come from the personal collection of art gallerist Ileana Sonnabend; rounding out the sale are fine French antique and modern furniture and decorative objects from the Estate of Elizabeth Stafford, Beverly Hills Hotel heiress Seema Boesky, and fashion icon Arnold Scaasi.
Our doors will be open for preview on Tue, Nov 13 from 11am to 7pm, Wed, Nov 14 from 11am to 5pm, Thu, Nov 15 from 9am to 5pm, Fri, Nov 16 from 9am to 5pm, and Sat, Nov 17 from 9am to 10am. Hope to see you!
